snow [ice] day. and foyle's war.

yesterday, school was dismissed at 9am due to inclement weather. of course the students are wild with glee when this happens-- and so are the teachers. josh got home at 10am and we spent what felt like a saturday all together. and we get another saturday today.

it's unfortunate that we didn't get snow. everything was covered in a sheet of dangerous ice, but no pretty white stuff to bring the boys out to play in.

it's funny-- southerners have this strange love/hate relationship with snow, i think. we love it, because we rarely see it and it's beautiful and we all go tumbling outside the moment it starts, knowing it might not last long. but we [especially i] hate it, too, because it is so very cold. and we hate being cold. i find that the older i get, the less enthusiastic i am about running outside to roll around in cold wetness. (actually, the less enthusiastic i am about lots of things, because this goes for the beach, too. anyone else experience this as you've gotten older? suddenly, lying on the beach with a book sounds infinitely better than getting smashed by saltwater waves. as a kid i used to feel sorry for the people who would rather sit on the sand than play in the water, but now i am that person. isn't it always like that?) so staying cozy inside (as cozy as i can in our 55-degree house) with a blanket and lots and lots of hot tea and watching the snow sounds much, much better.

of course, we didn't actually get any snow, only ice, so i'm not sure why i'm going on about my opinions of snow.

i do hope we get some this year, for the boys' sake. we didn't get any last year, and that was disappointing. i have these great visions of ransom and calvin being absolutely overcome with delight while playing in the snow. they are the perfect ages for it. but let's be realistic. josh took the boys out this morning to look at all the ice and he said after a few minutes calvin was already whining to come back inside, his hands red with cold. i need to knit some toddler mittens, sounds like.

and before i go, i have to post about foyle's war again. i know i've mentioned it before, but i'm finishing up watching the last season now, and i forgot how amazing it is. and i don't even like war movies/detective stories much. i basically stick to the jane austen genre of period dramas or you've-got-mail-esque romantic comedies. i am a very predictable female. but, foyle's war is so much more about the relationships between the characters than it is about the [extremely mild] action or the [according to josh, very obvious] mysteries. and michael kitchen's d.c.s. foyle might be one of the best screen characters ever.

anyway, it's all on instant stream on netflix, so you have no excuse not to see it. and if you don't have netflix, bum off your generous friends, like we do.
