kombucha tea
several years ago our friends tj and sheena gave us some kombucha tea to drink. i thought it was weird, but it tasted all right. sort of yeasty and carbonated, a little like beer.
a few weeks ago marielle from church gave me a kombucha mushroom to start brewing my own and i finally got around to starting it this week. i used the recipe from sally fallon's nourishing traditions cookbook (which i love, by the way--more on that later). the brew is at my parents' house, upstairs in a dark, warm room, growing all that good bacteria. it's ready to start tasting today! in preparation for the tasting, my dad went by the home economist yesterday and bought a few bottles to try so that we know what our homemade version is supposed to taste like. ginger, raspberry, lemon... we tasted five or six different flavors. our favorite: passionberry.
i'm thinking i'll flavor ours with ginger. providing it isn't a total flop. (more on that later.) we'll be tasting it today when we go to my parents' for our st. patrick's day dinner.
off to bake some irish soda bread.
