(flannery o'connor)
rachel plans to go to belmont abbey college (with very nearly a full ride) this fall and it makes me wish just a little bit that i were getting ready to go off to college, too! (and that i were catholic.) the college is private, liberal arts, and owned and operated by the monks of the Order of St. Benedict.
we went with her and my parents to the prospective student day, including mass, luncheon, and a tour. rachel got to talk to one of the english teachers for nearly an hour, who, as it turns out, teaches a class on just flannery o'connor. like any good catholic college. he was delighted to find out rachel is coming from a classical school-- which spawned the conversation on o'connor. i suppose you can't graduate from a classical school without being steeped in her stuff...my class of 11th grade spends nearly two months reading and studying and imitating her.
and speaking of flannery-- i love this tumblr on daily o'connor quotes.
one day i will write something about her. i've spent nearly half my life reading her, but ever noticed how the bigger, the more life-changing things are, the harder they are to articulate?
